A simple guide – How to make a MP3 ring tone for your phone

1.  Download a copy of the audacity tool and LAME MP3 encoder.
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/audacity-win-unicode-1.3.8.exe (extract to any place, no need install)
http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/Lame_v3.98.2_for_Audacity_on_Windows.exe

2.  Find you MP3 file at some MP3 search website -> http://www.boostermp3.com/

3.  Open your MP3 file with Audacity.

4.  To increase the MP3 volume so your Sony Ericsson phone can sound louder, move the slider as show below to the right. +5dB is usually good but you might wanna try +10 for very soft song.

5.  Go to File -> Export, select MP3 (you might press option for more setting) and press save…you are done !

6.  For ring tone, is always best to skip the intro part and straight to the the highlight, you can do this with Audacity too :)

7.  Press space bar or the Play button to start playing to MP3, you can see there is a line running. Press space bar again to stop. Find where is the place you want to begin the song (aka the Start Point).
You can fine tune the time by click on the Blue wave graph to move the line around. There is also a zoom button at top right to zoom the graph (Hint: Find the place where it have the low or no peak, there is the silent part)

8.  Press space bar again to continue the song from the place you mark as Start Point. Listen the song until you think is best to stop it (aka End Point). Remember that place.

9.  Now, click on the Start Point, hold your mouse button and drag the selection over to the End Point. Press space bar to listen to your selection.
You can also remember what the time for the Start Point and End Point and enter them to the Selection menu at bottom.

10. After you verify the selection is correct using space bar, go to File -> Export Selection (might need to enter MP3 song name at mp3 tag detail) and save as new mp3.

11. Then you are done…is that simple :)

12. For the advanced user, you might try to fade in/fade out tool at the Effect Menu. Select the first few second (2 second is good) and use the Fade in effect, then select the last few second (2 second is good) and use the Fade out effect.

That all for a simple MP3 edit and customize to be your mobile phone ring tone. Have fun :)
